Zakat

Building a Fairer Society and Gaining Allah’s Pleasure

It is important to emphasize that Zakat serves as a bridge connecting Muslims to the beauty of Islam. It acts as a shield, protecting Muslims from the temptations and distractions of the world ('Dunya'), and is the key to attaining ultimate success in the hereafter ('Akhirah').

The Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) said:

“One who pays Zakat, Allah will make their wealth increase”
(Sahih Bukhari) )"

The Importance of Zakat in Islam

Zakat, one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam, holds great significance. As a pillar, it underscores its essential role in the faith. Zakat is the obligatory amount that Muslims must give in charity to Allah (SWT). Numerous hadiths highlight the importance and value of this practice.

In the Quran, Zakat is frequently mentioned alongside Salat (prayer). There is wisdom (hikmah) behind every duty assigned by Allah (SWT). Zakat not only purifies one's wealth but also cleanses the soul. Many hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasize the importance of Zakat. Beyond being an act of devotion to Allah, Zakat is a powerful economic tool that ensures the welfare of the poor and needy in society. It facilitates the circulation of wealth from the rich to the poor, fostering economic development.

Zakat is not just a monetary contribution; it is a valuable investment. Numerous hadiths in Islam state that Allah (SWT) will multiply the rewards for those who give to the poor. This act becomes a safeguard for the giver in the hereafter (Akhirah). As narrated by Abu Huraira, Allah’s Apostle said that giving Zakat as an investment yields immense returns on the Day of Judgment, bringing joy in Akhirah.

Giving Zakat is an act beloved by Allah. When someone gives Zakat, it draws them closer to Allah spiritually. This hadith encourages Muslims to give generously to seek Allah’s love and proximity.

Zakat purifies Muslims by encouraging selfless giving and spending. It liberates them from the love of wealth and material gains. When given out of obedience to Allah’s will, Zakat purifies the soul from greed and miserliness. It is central to a Muslim’s life. The Prophet (PBUH) said that our wealth will not decrease if we spend it on the poor; instead, Allah will increase it manifold.

By giving Zakat, we purify our wealth, acknowledging that everything we own belongs to Allah. This act helps us strive to end poverty and support our brothers and sisters, thereby purifying our souls from the love of this world.
